Ioanna Karageorge is a Greek-American ocean science professional living in New York, NY, where she works in Business Operations at OceanX. She has been with OceanX for over four years, shaping best practices for ocean exploration, education, nature filmmaking, and core operational functions. Previously, Ioanna served as a Student Trainee at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Region 1’s New England Office. Her work at the EPA from 2020–2021 focused on data management for NPDES permit reporting within the ICIS database, as well as public lead-safety education for the Environmental Justice Unit through the Connecticut Geographic Initiative.

Ioanna holds a Bachelor’s degree (cum laude) from Boston University in Environmental Analysis & Policy with a minor in Marine Science. Her undergraduate research centered on coastal Massachusetts wetland ecology, with a focus on mapping marsh-boundary erosion and evaluating eelgrass restoration efficacy. She has also conducted international fieldwork, including studying parrotfish trophic dynamics and coral bleaching in Belize and working as a marine mammal researcher in Greece to help reduce vessel strikes and also map Mediterranean seagrass meadows.

Outside of work, you can find Ioanna volunteering on Governors Island, surfing in Rockaway, eating at her family’s Greek restaurant in Connecticut, playing bass guitar, and—when the opportunity arises—lounging on a far-off beach.
